Episode 23 – Staying Calm in Traffic: Mastering the Mental Game
You’re not moving. Again.
The car in front of you just cut you off like you don’t even exist.
Now what? You could honk. Yell. Tailgate. Or… breathe.
In Episode 23 of Mastering the Commute, Randy Keith explores what it really means to stay calm in traffic—not just as a nice idea, but as a practical, life-changing skill that can turn even your worst commute into a moment of control and clarity.
We've all been there—tense shoulders, white knuckles, and rising frustration in bumper-to-bumper gridlock. But here’s the truth: traffic isn't the problem—our reactions are. And those reactions can be rewired.
🎙️ In this episode, you’ll learn:
✅ Why traffic triggers our fight-or-flight response—and how to override it
✅ 5 real strategies to stay mentally calm, even when everyone else is losing it
✅ Why space equals grace—and how extra following distance helps more than safety
✅ How a simple “narration trick” turns you into a calm observer instead of a competitive reactor
✅ The power of rituals: what Randy does before every drive to mentally reset

This episode isn’t about being a perfect monk behind the wheel. It’s about having tools ready for those moments—the ones that usually trigger meltdowns, road rage, and regret. Instead of reacting, you’ll learn how to recenter yourself, make smarter decisions, and drive like your mindset matters. Because it does.
Randy also calls back to key episodes that laid the groundwork for this mindset shift:

Episode 23: Staying Calm in Traffic – Mastering the Mental Game
Traffic Happens. But Meltdowns Don’t Have To.
Welcome to Mastering the Commute, where we help you drive smarter, stay calmer, and avoid the chaos other drivers bring. I’m Randy Keith—and today’s episode is personal, because I’ve been that guy. Frustrated. Impatient. On edge in gridlock.
But here’s the truth: traffic isn’t the problem. How we respond to it is.
We all hit delays. But staying calm in traffic isn’t just about keeping your cool. It’s about staying in control of your entire commute—your time, your focus, your energy, and your safety.
Segment 1: Why Traffic Triggers Us
Ever notice how a short backup can ruin your whole day? That’s not just impatience—it’s biology. When we feel trapped, our fight-or-flight system kicks in.
• Heart rate rises
• Breathing shortens
• Tunnel vision sets in
This reaction made sense when we were running from lions. But in a Kia Soul on I-4? Not so much.
And here’s the kicker: the more you react, the more chaos you attract. The closer you follow, the tighter you grip, the more frustrated you get.
Segment 2: Five Ways to Stay Calm When You Feel Stuck
These aren’t theories. These are real tools you can start using today—even on your worst traffic day.
1. Own Your Schedule
Leave 10 minutes earlier. It’s boring advice. But 10 minutes is the buffer that turns “stuck” into “fine.” When you’re not racing the clock, you stop racing other drivers.
2. Use a Commute Ritual
Whether it’s a podcast (like this one), a playlist, or a silent few minutes—create a ritual that puts you in the right mental lane.
Tip: I warmup my voice every single time I’m driving to a performance. . It’s part of my routine… It reminds me: I’m not just driving—I’m preparing.
3. Narrate the Chaos
Instead of reacting, observe. Say out loud:
“That guy’s speeding to get one car length ahead.”
“Brake lights up ahead—probably a merge.”
Doing this makes you a commentator, not a competitor. Your stress drops.
4. Practice “Space Equals Grace”
When you give yourself room—3, 4, even 6 seconds of following distance—you’re not just being defensive. You’re making room for your mind to breathe.
People cut you off less when you’re not tailgating. And when they do, it’s no big deal.
5. Reframe the Wait
Traffic can be a gift—if you use it. Catch up on a podcast. Call a friend (hands-free). Or just be still. Some of my best ideas come while idling.
Segment 3: Let the Other Drivers Be the Problem
Here’s something I say all the time: You don’t have to join their chaos.
That tailgater? Let them go. That honker behind you? They’ll honk at someone else in 5 seconds.
What you don’t have to do is escalate. You are not a traffic cop. You are not an enforcer of right and wrong. You’re a commuter. A person with a destination. Let them be angry alone.
Key point: Your calm is power. It diffuses danger. It sets a tone. And it’s contagious—even if the other driver never notices.
Segment 4: How GPS Can Keep You Calm
One of the best tools for staying calm on the road is already in your pocket: your navigation app.
Apps like Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze don’t just tell you where to go — they help you mentally prepare for what’s ahead.
Before you even start driving, zoom out and take a look at the route:
• Green roads = smooth flow
• Yellow = some slowdowns
• Red or dark red = heavy traffic or stop-and-go
• Sometimes you’ll even see icons for construction, crashes, or police
When you know a backup is coming, it doesn’t feel like an ambush.
It’s expected. You’ve planned for it. That alone can lower your stress level.
And when you don’t get stuck , you’ll feel grateful instead of on edge.
Segment 5: Pre-Driving Habits for Peace of Mind
This ties back to Episode 3: Freeway Personalities — especially if you’re an “over-preparer” or a “reactive driver.”
If you tend to get frustrated easily, try this:
• Leave 10 minutes early, just for buffer
• Use a weather app if rain or fog is forecast
• Glance at your route overview — not just ETA, but traffic layers
• Set your playlist, podcast, or phone to Do Not Disturb
The more you prepare, the less you have to react — and that’s the mindset shift we’re after.
You’re not just driving the car. You’re managing your state.
Wrap-Up & Call to Action:
You can’t control other drivers. But you can control your environment — your expectations, your speed, your breath, your focus.
Use the tools that keep you calm. The drive might not change — but how you experience it absolutely can.
Closing Segment – Your Commute Can Be a Calm Zone
Staying calm in traffic isn’t about being perfect. You’re human. You’ll get annoyed. But the more tools you use, the faster you reset. And the more consistent you become.
Over time, traffic stops being a warzone… and becomes just a part of the ride.
