How to Predict Traffic Like a Traffic Reporter

Imagine you are sitting in a traffic newsroom.
There are maps on the screens.
Cameras showing freeways.
Incident reports coming in.
Red lines on the speed map.
Alerts from drivers.
Now the question is not simply:
“Where is the traffic?”
The real question is:
“What does it mean?”
That is how traffic reporters think.
And today, I’m going to show you how to use that same mindset to predict traffic before you leave the house.

Welcome back to Mastering the Commute.
I’m Randy Keith.
Last week, we talked about why traffic happens in the same places every day. We talked about freeway personalities, recurring bottlenecks, traffic density, and why traffic is far more predictable than most people realize.
Today we’re taking the next step.
Because once you understand that traffic is predictable, the next question is:
How do you actually predict it?
Twenty years ago, traffic reporters had access to tools most drivers did not have.
Traffic helicopters.
Traffic cameras.
Police incident reports.
Speed maps.
Radio calls.
Transportation department data.
Today, many of those tools are available to every driver through Google Maps, Waze, Apple Maps, state traffic websites, and navigation systems.
But access to information is not the same as understanding.
That is the key.
A traffic map can show you red lines.
But it cannot always tell you whether that red line is normal, unusual, temporary, growing, clearing, or worth changing your route over.
That part still requires judgment.
And that is what this episode is about.
Segment 1 — Traffic Colors Are Clues, Not Answers
Let’s start with the most basic tool most drivers use every day:
traffic colors.
Generally speaking:
Green means traffic is flowing close to normal speed.
Yellow means traffic is slowing.
Red means significant slowing.
Dark red or maroon usually means heavy congestion or stop-and-go traffic.
Most drivers understand that part.
But here is where many drivers get it wrong:
Red traffic does not automatically mean there is an accident.
That is one of the most important distinctions in traffic reporting.
Traffic colors usually represent average speed.
They tell you what traffic is doing.
They do not always tell you why traffic is doing it.
A red stretch of freeway could mean there is a crash.
But it could also mean:
rush-hour volume,
a merge point,
a lane drop,
a hill,
a curve,
a construction zone,
a recurring bottleneck,
or simply too many vehicles trying to use the same road at the same time.
That is why a traffic reporter does not look at a red line and immediately say:
“There must be an accident.”
A traffic reporter asks:
“Is this normal for this road, in this direction, at this time of day?”
That question changes everything.
Segment 2 — Think Like You Are in the Traffic Center
Picture the traffic center again.
You are not looking at one piece of information.
You are comparing several.
A speed map shows red traffic.
A camera shows whether lanes are blocked.
An incident report says there is a crash.
A driver report says traffic is stopped.
A navigation app suggests an alternate.
Your job is not to repeat every alert.
Your job is to understand which alerts actually matter.
That is the difference between reading traffic and interpreting traffic.
A traffic reporter is constantly asking:
Is this normal?
Is this unusual?
Is it in the heavy direction of travel?
Is it blocking lanes?
Is it on the shoulder?
Is it before or after a major bottleneck?
Is the backup growing or clearing?
Is there an alternate route that actually helps?
That sounds like a lot, but once you start thinking this way, it becomes natural.
And honestly, this is one of the biggest differences between a driver who reacts emotionally to traffic and a driver who understands what is happening.
Segment 3 — Use Google Maps Before You Leave
One of the most useful tools available today is built right into Google Maps.
Most people use Google Maps reactively.
They type in a destination.
They see how long the drive takes right now.
Then they hit start.
But Google Maps can also help you predict traffic before you leave.
After you enter your starting point and destination, look for the timing option that usually says something like:
Leave now.
On mobile, you can tap that option and change it to:
Depart at
or
Arrive by.
On desktop, the process is very similar. Once you enter your route, you can adjust the departure or arrival time instead of only looking at the current drive.
This is incredibly useful.
If you are going to the airport, you can use Arrive by.
If you have an appointment, use Arrive by.
If you are planning a road trip, use Depart at.
If you are deciding whether to leave now or wait an hour, compare both options.
Instead of asking:
“How long would this drive take right now?”
You can ask:
“How long does this drive usually take at the time I actually plan to go?”
That is a much better question.
And it is much closer to how traffic reporters think.
Segment 4 — Historical Traffic Gives You a Baseline
Real-time traffic matters if you are leaving immediately.
But historical traffic is often more useful when you are planning ahead.
Google Maps has access to years of traffic patterns.
It knows that Monday morning is different from Sunday morning.
Friday afternoon is different from Tuesday afternoon.
A holiday weekend is different from a normal weekend.
This matters because traffic prediction is not just about what is happening right now.
It is about comparing current or future conditions against what normally happens.
Let me use Los Angeles as an example.
The distance from the north end of the San Fernando Valley to West Los Angeles is not very far.
Depending on the exact starting point and destination, you may only be talking about roughly fifteen miles.
Without traffic, that drive might take twenty minutes.
But during the morning commute, especially on the southbound 405 through the Sepulveda Pass, that same drive could easily take close to an hour.
Same road.
Same distance.
Completely different conditions.
That is why historical patterns matter.
If you check that route at five in the morning, you might think:
“That is not bad at all.”
But if you actually plan to leave at 7:30, you may be looking at a completely different drive.
The map is not just showing distance.
It is showing time, volume, and patterns.
Segment 5 — Context Matters More Than the Incident
Now let’s talk about one of the most important traffic reporter skills:
context.
An incident by itself does not tell you very much.
You have to ask what it means.
Let’s stay with the 405 example.
In the morning, the heavier commute direction leaving the San Fernando Valley is usually southbound, especially approaching the 101 and continuing through the Sepulveda Pass toward West Los Angeles.
So if I hear there is an accident northbound on the shoulder at 7:30 in the morning, that may not be a major traffic problem.
Why?
Because northbound may not be the heavy volume side at that time.
The incident is on the shoulder.
And there may not be enough traffic volume northbound for it to create a major delay.
But could that same crash still matter?
Absolutely.
If southbound drivers slow down to look, it could create rubbernecking delays on the heavy side.
If the crash is visually dramatic, people may slow down even if nothing is blocking their lanes.
And if the crash is actually blocking northbound lanes instead of sitting on the shoulder, that changes the story again.
Same freeway.
Same time.
Same general location.
But the impact changes based on:
direction,
time of day,
traffic volume,
whether lanes are blocked,
and whether drivers are rubbernecking.
That is why traffic reporters do not simply ask:
“Where is the crash?”
They ask:
“What does this crash actually mean?”
Segment 6 — Shoulder Versus Lanes
One of the simplest ways to judge an incident is to ask:
Is it in lanes or on the shoulder?
A crash blocking three lanes is very different from a crash sitting safely on the shoulder.
A disabled vehicle in the right lane is very different from a disabled vehicle off to the side.
Debris in traffic lanes is different from debris on the shoulder.
When lanes are blocked, capacity drops.
When capacity drops during heavy traffic, the backup can grow quickly.
But if the incident is out of lanes, during a lighter period, on the lighter side of the freeway, it may not cause much delay at all.
This is why some traffic reports sound confusing to listeners.
You may hear:
“Crash reported on the shoulder.”
But then you wonder:
“Why is traffic still terrible?”
Sometimes the answer is that the crash is not the real problem.
The real problem is the normal bottleneck.
Or the crash happened earlier and the backup has not cleared.
Or drivers are slowing down to look.
Or another problem exists farther ahead.
This is why interpretation matters.
Segment 7 — Alternates Are Not Always Better
Another major part of traffic reporting is evaluating alternate routes.
Drivers often assume that if there is traffic ahead, the alternate route must be better.
Sometimes it is.
But often, especially during rush hour, the obvious alternate is not better at all.
If a major freeway is slow during the busiest part of the commute, thousands of other drivers may be looking at the same alternate.
That surface street may have traffic lights, school zones, pedestrians, turns, driveways, and local traffic.
A route that looks like it saves two minutes on the app may feel far more stressful in real life.
And sometimes it does not actually save time once everyone else takes it too.
This is one reason I always say:
The fastest route is not always the best route.
Now, context matters here too.
If you are on a rural highway and there is a major closure ahead, an alternate route might be a great idea.
If you are driving on the opposite volume side of a freeway and an incident is in lanes, an alternate may help.
If you are traveling late at night and surface streets are empty, a detour may work beautifully.
But during peak commute periods, the obvious alternate can become just another traffic jam.
So instead of asking:
“Is there an alternate?”
Ask:
“Is this alternate actually better under these conditions?”
That is the traffic reporter question.
Segment 8 — Use More Than One Source
I have already done separate episodes on Google Maps, Waze, and navigation apps, so I do not want to repeat that entire conversation here.
But I do want to make one point.
Traffic reporters almost never rely on one source.
They compare information.
A speed map tells one part of the story.
A camera tells another.
An incident report tells another.
A police or fire response may tell another.
A listener or driver report may tell another.
Modern drivers can do something similar.
Check Google Maps.
Check Waze.
Check Apple Maps.
Check your state DOT website if it has traffic cameras.
Look at highway signs.
Listen to local traffic reports if they are available.
If two or three sources agree, you can be more confident.
If they disagree, that can also tell you something.
Maybe one app has newer information.
Maybe one app is routing more aggressively.
Maybe the incident cleared, but the backup remains.
Maybe the map still shows red because traffic has not recovered yet.
The goal is not to become obsessed with traffic data.
The goal is to develop better judgment.
Segment 9 — The Traffic Reporter Decision Tree
Here is a simple traffic reporter decision tree you can use before you leave.
First:
Is this traffic normal for this road and time?
Second:
Is there an incident?
Third:
Is the incident blocking lanes or on the shoulder?
Fourth:
Is it in the heavy direction of travel?
Fifth:
Is the backup longer than usual?
Sixth:
Is the backup growing or clearing?
Seventh:
Is there an alternate route that actually makes sense?
And finally:
Should I change routes, leave earlier, leave later, or simply accept the delay?
That last option is important.
Sometimes the smartest traffic decision is acceptance.
If every route is bad, switching roads may only add stress.
If the freeway is slow but moving, it may still be better than a complicated detour.
If the delay is normal for that time of day, you may simply need to build that into your schedule.
A good traffic reporter does not just tell you where traffic is.
A good traffic reporter helps you understand what your options really are.
Segment 10 — Traffic Is Always Breaking News
One of my favorite sayings is:
Traffic is always breaking news.
Even the best map is only a snapshot.
An accident can happen after you check.
A lane can reopen.
A storm can roll through.
A drawbridge can go up.
A stadium can empty.
A construction crew can shift lanes.
That is why no map can guarantee your drive.
Traffic maps are forecasts.
And like weather forecasts, they become more useful when you understand the system behind them.
That is really the point of this episode.
You do not need to predict traffic perfectly.
You just need to predict it well enough to reduce surprises.
And fewer surprises means less stress.
What To Remember
If you remember nothing else from today’s episode, remember these five points:
- Traffic colors show speed, not always cause.
- Red traffic does not automatically mean an accident.
- Google Maps can estimate future travel times with Depart at and Arrive by.
- Context matters: direction, time of day, volume, lanes, and rubbernecking all change the impact of an incident.
- The best traffic reporters do not just ask, “What happened?” They ask, “What does it mean?”
Closing
When I started reporting traffic, most drivers did not have access to the tools I used every day.
Today, most of those tools are free.
But information by itself is not enough.
The value comes from interpretation.
That is true in traffic.
And honestly, it is true in a lot of life.
The goal is not to avoid every backup.
The goal is to understand what is happening well enough that you can make calmer, smarter decisions.
So the next time you open Google Maps or Waze, don’t just ask:
“Is the road red?”
Ask:
“Is this normal?”
“Does this matter?”
“And what is the smartest decision from here?”
That is how you predict traffic like a traffic reporter.
